A Household That Knows the Lord - 1 Samuel 1:1-3

In this sermon, Pastor Luis Villasenor examines the biblical households of Hannah and Eli from 1 Samuel to illustrate five essential marks of a household that knows the Lord. The Five Marks of a Godly Household:
1. Dedication (5:37-13:13): A household that knows the Lord views children as gifts belonging to God, parenting out of stewardship rather than ownership. Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Lord before he was even born (6:07-7:41).
2. Devotion (13:24-27:26): Faithfulness requires active presence and attentiveness. A godly marriage provides the "soil" for children, and parents must remain engaged in their children’s lives rather than relying on secondhand reports, as Eli did with his sons (13:35-13:48, 16:08-16:46, 21:07-21:32).
3. Doctrine (27:26-39:19): Proximity to holy things or religious rituals does not equate to knowing the Lord. Eli's sons were raised in the tabernacle but did not know God; the narrator notes their "worthlessness" to show that salvation is not inherited (28:33-29:13, 30:02-31:24).
4. Discipline (39:19-55:15): Genuine love involves restraining sin. Eli failed because he spoke words of correction but never enforced them. Godly discipline is costly and consequence-driven, modeling the way God disciplines those He loves (43:09-44:07, 51:52-52:47).
5. Decrease (55:15-1:07:45): As children grow, parents must shift from a season of active obedience to one of mutual honor. This requires the parent to "decrease" and let the child’s personal walk with God increase, acknowledging the transition from childhood to mature faith (56:29-57:56, 1:05:15-1:05:57).
Final Conclusion:
The ultimate question for everyone, whether parent or child, is: "Do you personally know the Lord?" (4:37, 1:08:14-1:08:45).
